the plan

The goal of Vision for a Nation in Rwanda is to screen the vision of all people aged 8 years and above and provide eyeglasses to those who need them within five years.

Vision for a Nation Rwanda is being conducted in three phases:

Phase One (August 2010 - September 2011): Set out to establish the best distribution method for the program. During this period 2,038 Rwandans had a vision assessment with more than 700 receiving eyeglasses.

Phase Two (March 2012 - June 2013): Will establish health centres as the base of operations from which nurses will offer access to vision correction countrywide. It is estimated that 425,000 Rwandans aged 8 years and above will receive free vision assessments with up to 30,000 pairs of eyeglasses provided.

Phase Three (2013 - 2015): Will build on the groundwork laid in Phase 2 so that by 2015 all of Rwanda will have been covered.

Vision for a Nation aims to empower health workers and teachers through appropriate in-country training. This will help to develop a more productive, efficient and knowledgeable healthcare work force, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of Rwanda's eye care infrastructure.
